It used to be common practice for lawyers to write unique bar exams in each state they wanted to practice. Not only is this approach cumbersome, but it’s also inefficient. Although states have slight legal discrepancies, there’s a large overlap between state bar exams.
So, without further ado, let’s break down UBE passing scores!
The UBE jurisdiction scores can be somewhat confusing to those unfamiliar with the groupings. In total, there are five different benchmark scores that are considered passable. You’ll see jurisdiction fall in one of each category for minimum score totals.: 260, 264, 266, 268, and 270.

The important thing to remember is that UBE scores are on a 400-point scale. Aspiring lawyers will be tested on general knowledge that’s relevant no matter what branch of law they choose to practice in. The UBE can give lawyers more flexibility to practice in different states.
The Uniform Bar Exam is divided into three different sections: the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE), and the Multistate Performance Test (MPT).
The Multistate Bar Exam (MBE) is the first portion of the UBE and consists of 200 multiple-choice questions. These questions will go over major content areas such as criminal law, constitutional law, contracts, evidence, and civil procedures. The MBE counts for 50% of the total UBE score.
The second portion of the UBE is the Multistate Essay Exam (MEE). Students will be required to read and write essays pertaining to various legal topics such as trusts and estates, business associations, and torts. The MEE accounts for less of the total UBE score at approximately 30%.
The final part of the UBE is the Multistate Performance Test (MPT). The MPT is the most practical aspect of the UBE. Students are tasked with creating a makeshift legal case based off of a set of documents. The MPT accounts for 20% of the total UBE score.

Passing UBE scores by state differ depending on where you are. You’ll find that the states cluster into a few different minimum passing scores that correspond to each jurisdiction. It’s important to check which states you want to practice in, as the minimum passing UBE score isn’t the same across all states.
