Indiana has three ABA-accredited law schools prospective students can choose from. U.S. World and News Report rank each law school among the top 100 in the United States.
It’s important to note that Indiana used to be home to four law schools. However, as of 2020, the Valparaiso University School of Law suspended admissions and shut down. So as it stands, the state has three top-tier law schools to choose from.
Indiana University Maurer School of Law has a long history. It was founded in 1842 as the Midwest's first state university law school and the ninth law school in the nation.
Students can choose from 17 optional areas of study and various courses. The Maurer School of Law also allows students to contribute to their communities and supplement their in-class education with public interest opportunities.
Students can also participate in clinics, including the Elmore Entrepreneurship Law Clinic, which assists clients in starting sustainable businesses, and the Inmate Legal Assistance Project, which provides students with first-hand experience at a federal prison.
Though it has a lower national ranking than other law schools in Indiana, the McKinney School of Law has a solid reputation and the highest post-graduate employment rate of any Indiana law school. Two United States Vice Presidents, senators, representatives, governors, and ambassadors have graduated.
The McKinney School of Law is the largest law school in the state and is situated within the urban core of Indianapolis. So, it offers a very different environment and experience than its counterpart, the Maurer School of Law, which is also a part of Indiana University.
Notre Dame Law School (NDLS) is the highest-ranked law school in Indiana, with numerous Supreme and Federal Court clerkships. It’s also one of the nation's oldest Roman Catholic law schools, which uses its religious foundation as a guiding principle in applying legal education.
NDLS has a relatively small class size of just over 500 students, which helps foster community and student collaboration. Despite its Roman Catholic background, it welcomes students of all backgrounds and faiths.
